GERALD SHOOTER
1945 – 2023

We were all shocked and immensely saddened last Monday when the news came through that Gerry Shooter had passed away.

Gerry had been a fixture at the club and since he first represented the club as a teenager before most of our members were even born.

He was always proud to point out, and quite rightly too, that his cricket career with Rochdale spanned six decades. He played from the late fifties, for our thirds, now known as the Under 18s until he retired in 2008.
During that time he turned out for all three of our senior teams and captained them all at some stage.

Gerald was an all rounder in the true sense of the expression. He batted, bowled, kept wicket and fielded close to the wicket or in the covers all with characteristic enthusiasm. ... Sometimes too enthusiastic as the odd spat with a captain would indicate!   He was equally spirited post cricket too, which won him many friends around the CLL, and he could always be relied on to stop for a drink or two wherever he had played.

He also served on club committees, represented the club at the league and spent time on the league executive committee.

His sporting prowess wasn’t limited to cricket.  He was a notable rugby player –he played both league and union, the latter for many years for Rochdale, and he was more than decent a golfer.

His career was wide and varied.   Once a teacher, his later years were spent in the NHS.  In fact if you spent any time in Rochdale Infirmary, the chances are, that you would have been wheeled around by Gerald.

He was married to Jenny – they were still Saturday tea time regulars at the club, and they have three children, Becky Emma and Chris.

We would all like to extend to them, and the rest of Gerry’s family and friends, our deepest heartfelt sympathies.
